Iona cottage is one of the oldest buildings in the area. It dates from the mid to late 16th century, the Tudor period of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. It is believed to have been a Weavers cottage and established when the textile industry began to flourish in the Limpley Stoke/ Freshford area, though over its many years Iona will have served many people for different purposes.
The construction will have been simple with perhaps only a couple of rooms and single story. It is possible that the origins of the main wooden beams may have been and purchased in the area from traders bringing up sections from wrecked ships on the south and west coast of England. It is rumoured that possibly even the remains of the destroyed Spanish Armada might have been traded locally.
In later years (mid 19th century) it became a Inn and Lodging House which provided refreshments for not only for the locals but particularly the men involved in the construction of the new Great Western Railway and the impressive local Viaduct. There have been several items found in the garden that are of brewing origins. The building today is now divided into two separate dwellings but much of the original features are still clear to see and with little imagination, the ghosts of yesteryear remain to this day.
Woodside View stands high on the side of a classically beautiful South Devon valley, and yet only eight minutes drive from the centre of Dartmouth.
