The city of Bristol is one of Britain's best known cities, famous for a rich maritime and industrial heritage. Located approximately 12 miles from Bath, Bristol is now a bustling city full of interesting atrractions and activities which is easily reached by bus or rail networks from Bath.
One of the best places to start a day in Bristol is at the harbourside. Bristol docks, once a thriving hub of industry, has now turned into a trendy waterfront destination. Here you can start with a visit to Brunel's S.S. Great Britain - the world's first ocean-going, propeller driven iron ship. After a quick lunch, grab a boat down the river to 'At-Bristol'. This complex incoperates 3 world-class attractions: the IMAX 3D Theatre, Explore (an interactive science museum), and Wildwalk (a wildlife experience), and was voted 'Family Attraction of the Year' by the Good Britain Guide 2001.
Moving away from the quayside, Bristol Zoo in Clifton is an excellent day out for all the family. The zoo has just about every animal you could expect to see in captivity, whilst the recently opened Monkey Jungle is proving to be a big hit with the public.
Leaving the zoo, why not make your way to the famous Clifton Suspension bridge. Another product of Bristols most famous resident, Brunel's Grade I listed structure has attracted visitors for nearly over 150 years. We recommend visiting at night when the bridge is lit up - you'll get some great views.
Bristol also boasts some of the best shopping in the region. With multitudes to stores to choose from you be able to shop till you drop. Afterwards, call into one of the trendy bars or pubs which line the area for a well earned drink (or two!). As with Bath, Bristol has a wealth of restaurants and bars to meet your every need. For more information see www.bristoleating.com for a comprehensive guide.
Bristol also has a first-rate theatre, the Hippodrome, which stages big name west end shows on most days of the week. Recent shows include: Cats, Oliver! and La Boheme. Visit the website for current productions.
